Stop brewing. when the beer runs out and they start to complain, tell them to pony up the bucks to pay for all of the ingredients. When the cash hits your hand, tell them you'll be more than happy to brew up some more.

well one option you have is:

1) take off the tap handles
2) hook up a car battery to the shank
3) put a lock on the fridge

Actually i believe article no. 173b. of the brewers code states "Thou shalt not take advantage of thine homebrewing roommates."

The roommates aren't brewers and won't follow the code

Why don't you ask Shat what he does. It sounds like he has the same problem.

I started to get irritated at a couple friends who came over and seemed to drink a lot of beer and even said they enjoy the free beer. So I offered to clean the gutters on their house in exchange for kegs. That worked. I also thought about leaving a pitcher near the taps labeled "tips"

I agree that you need to talk to them about footing the bill. I mentioned to my friends that I don't mind making 10 gallons of beers, if they buy the ingredients I will supply the time, propane, water, etc. They get 5 gallons and I get 5 gallons. It never took off, but I have not hear about the free beer any more.

If all else fails, lock the taps up. When they bitch ask for cash...

Your first mistake was offering to clean THEIR gutters in exchange for kegs. You buy the kegs and make the beer.... THEY clean YOUR gutters.

At the price of kegs now a days I figure it was a fair offer. In the future it will be for grain...
