Re: Brewing TV - 10 - Cascadian Dark Ale Debate

Just received the BYO yesterday, still waiting for Zymurgy.

Around the 6:00 mark in the Brewing TV interview Abram Goldman-Armstrong mentions that "American PA" is a "regionally biased" descriptor that excludes Victoria, BC. While "America" often refers to the USofA, it also is a geographic descriptor that refers to a couple of continents, and that would include Victoria, BC, so it is an accurate descriptor for a style that also originated in Canada.

As one who resides in the US, but not in America (either continent) and a frequent traveler to "Cascadia", Abram should reconsider the notion that the regional descriptor "America" excludes Canada.

I am looking forward to finding a commercial example of this to taste. As I am not one to be bothered much on what a beer is called, I'll leave that to others. If it is a tasty style (or sub-style) to my palate, I will most likely make my own version and not worry about what it's name should be.

p.s. Why is it when I see a photo of a man with a hyphenated last name wearing a kilt does Monty Python's "Lumberjack" song immediately pop in my head?

Oh. I get it now. It's a CDA because California has nothing to do with the origins of this beer style at all. Cool.

More likely Cascadia is an attempt to expand the market for BC Buds and add a border crossing for Humbolt County agricultural products.

I don't understand the exclusion of Juneau and the remainder of Southern Alaska from inclusion into Cascadia. It is hatred for french speaking people and smoked porter that has created the rebel Cascadian alliance?

Is Cascadia anywhere near Narnia? I guess you have to be from there to be able to wrap your head around a name that reminds one of some imaginary place in some children's fable.

I second Tasty's motion, all in favor...

I am sitting here sipping on my 3rd Imperial Janet's and I am kind of wondering. Isn't this a India Black Ale, Cascadian Dark Ale or Black IPA? I have only had 3 commercial beers that could fall into this category and they all really resemble the Janet's Brown. I don't have Tasty's recipe handy, but I don't remember any Carafa II included in the grain bill. Maybe I haven't had a so-called CDA, but I consider Tasty to be the originator.

Also, I love the BTV show. It kills a good 30 minutes at work every Friday.
