So I got my score sheets back a little over a week ago... forgot to update this thread...

My second place Hefeweizen scored a 44.
Damn! Am I wrong or doesn't a 44 usually place first? I guess it depends on the competition, huh?

I'm still such a noob at this. Here I felt I paid more attention during brewing and fermentation of my Cal Common and thought it turned out much better than my Hef but it only scored a 29. Both judges mentioned that the Cal Common wasn't dry enough despite the fact that my FG was 1.007. They also both detected a salty flavor in the finish. I can't detect it but I thought it was interesting as this was the first batch where I used the 5.2 buffer in the mash. Is there something else that may have caused this salty flavor?

5.2 will do that if you use it full strength, try at half strength and you will probably be ok

I don't have a lot of competition experience yet but would think a 44 usually wins. Depends on who you're up against. Either way, congrats on the score.
