Can I get away with it...?

Tue Apr 30, 2013 8:09 pm

I'm gearing up to brew a higher gravity beer than anything I've ever done before. I want to do a starter, but I'm too poor to buy a flask this time around. If I sanitize the crap out of a thoroughly scrubbed growler, can I make my starter in that?

Sure why not? I have seen people make them out of 2-liter bottles...just shake it as often as you can...for the most cell production

I used a growler for years before breaking down and buying a flask and making a stir plate.

Be gentle with it. Don't scrub the crap out of it & scratches into it. Treat it like a bottle or carboy. I mostly use a long PBW soak since I hate using a bottle or carboy brush on anything. I've done hundreds and hundreds of starters/mini-ferments in growlers, 1 gallon jugs & 3 gallon carboys.

Sounds good. I just looked through How to Brew again, and his pictures in the section about making starters shows him using a growler, too. Guess I shoulda checked there first :)

I make all my starters in Carlo Rossi jugs. They work great and they're fun to empty in you're belly!

I used those for a while before I bought 2 cases of 1 gallon jugs. They're awesome to use. I just can't drink it. I don't mind wine occasionally, but I've gotta be in the mood... and Spidey-whitey doesn't stop by often enough with candles & the Barry White mix tape.
