Door panel replacement material?

Mon Sep 20, 2010 9:54 pm

So I just finished doing some surgery on my little GE dorm fridge: removed the door shelving panels, repositioned the thermostat, and bent back the freezer manifold. I can now fit 2 corny's and a 5# CO2 tank!

However, without the moulded plastic door shelves, there is a new bit of cold air leaking from the door seal in a few spots. It's not a huge draft, but I have another one of these fridges that is unmodified and doesn't leak at all. The door still has the factory insulation that was behind the plastic shelving panel.

I want to seal up the door panel with a single sheet of something of about the same edge thickness as the removed door panel (~1/8") that will be affixed to the door frame by the screws are holding on the door gasket.

Any suggestions?

I started out with plexiglass, but in a short time it cracked and shattered. Now I've got a real thin sheet of plywood. Surprisingly, no problem with mold or anything, even though I've flooded the fridge several times with leaky kegs. If I were going to do it over again, I'd get that stuff they make shower stalls out of.

I think that shower board (dry erase board) is the way to go. It's cheap and water resistant. It's usually sold in 4x8 sheets.

Shower board comes in different grades. Some of it is just plastic stuck on wood, and I wouldn't use that kind.

I went with some stuff called FRP, which I think stands for fiberglass reinforced plastic. About $32.00 for a 4X8 sheet at Lowes. One side is textured, and I turned that side toward the door insulation because I wanted a smooth surface (easier to clean). The stuff is easy to cut and works great. I recommend it.

When I did this for my fermentation fridge, I went the cheap route. The next door neighbor had just remodeled his bathroom. The plastic shower surround was just laying there next to the trash can. After cutting and a good scrubbing it became the new fridge door panel. This is the all plastic stuff the guys above are talking about.
