Ithaca Brewery Double IPA... with All NY Hops!!!

Mon Sep 04, 2006 12:51 pm

Saturday I had a Double IPA from Ithaca Brewery in Ithaca NY. I was surprised but it did pour a little cloudy with a short head then realized it was bottle conditioned. The color was lite orange to yellow... I expected more of a darker appearance for some reason. Very nice hop aroma and a hint of malt sweetness and alcohol but mostly in your face hops. I let it get too cold so I let it warm up a bit and malt aroma started coming through. The taste was citrus and pine flavor from the hops with a very dry finish. I would have thought the malt sweetness would have come through more but it didn't. Some of the Double IPA's I have had were too sweet. The finish was medium body with the hop bitterness staying with you but no hot alcohol sensation. I got some other flavors and aromas but I haven't been able to pick them out yet. I'll try some more and try and pull them out. I really enjoyed it a lot. This IPA is different and stands on it's own I think. Nothing like all NY hops to make your beer stand out. The only thing I would like to see is to smooth it out a bit and pump up the hop aroma with more agressive dry hopping and/or late hopping. Maybe a little more sweetness to balance the hop bitterness but this was bottle conditioned so I bet if I find it on tap it will be a little more rounded or if I cellar it for some time that could help too.

This company isn't distributed too far out of NY but if you can find this try it, you won't be disappointed.

Cheers,

Rob

Nice review, 2Dog. Are there any breweries out near Watkin's Glen? My brother's in-laws are out that way. There are a couple wineries, I know.

Dude, Watkins Glen is in the Finger Lakes Region... that's where Ithaca Beer Co. is located, well in the region anyway. Not sure how far the drive is to the Brewery for sure but Watkins Glen is near Seneca Lake and the next lake over, Cayuga Lake, is the area that Ithaca Beer Co. is located. It should be on tap or in a Bev Store some place around their house but if not then I think they should make a road trip. Along with the Double IPA they should try the Nut Brown Ale it's really good. IF they really like beer and not the yellow fizzy stuff they should go to Cooperstown and have some of the Belgians from Ommegang and then try the Ales from Cooperstown Brewery like Old Slugger and Strike Out Stout. Another brewery that I hear good things about but haven't had any of their beer is Butternuts in Garrattsville NY. It's in the same general area as the others.

Hope that helps,

Definitely. Thanks for the pointers. My bro is a West Coast IPA hop-head so that should give him something to cheer about for the trips East.

There is a Rooster Fish Brewery that is new. I haven’t been there. I live about 60-90 minutes away north on route 14 and haven’t made the trek yet. There are also many wineries along Seneca Lake. One I prefer is Glenora, which is pretty close by. There is Ithaca brewing which near Cayuga Lake. There also is Wagner Valley Vineyards, which is also a brewery in Lodi north on 414.

There is a brewery in Honeoye Falls called Custom Brewcrafters that has distribution in Hammondsport, which is the opposite direction of Ithaca.
