Corny maintenance.

Thu Oct 15, 2009 3:07 pm

I see a thread on AHA Tech Talk where posters talk about lubricating corny keg gaskets and poppets. I haven't done this to mine, and no leaks so far, but it may be an issue down the road.

The posters don't say, but perhaps used motor oil, axle grease, Noxema face cream, K-Y Jelly and lard (the "lubricants" I have on hand) are not appropriate.

So what should I "lubricate" them with?

TIA,
Charlie

I hope you don't store them all in the same place!

I most certainly do not! I hear that Noxema face cream is explosive when mixed with K-Y Jelly. :D

I use keg lube. I got it from Williams Brewing, I think. It's a clear, food grade lubricant. I don't use it too often, though. Just when the o-rings on the posts get a little binding. Then as soon as the keg is empty I replace all the o-rings. Once or twice a year.

I use a tiny, tiny amount on the post gaskets every once in while. A little goes a very long way. I've never seen the need to use it on the lid gasket or the poppets. This little 1 oz will probably last me 10 years:

I use a tube of LubriFilm and apply a tiny bit to each o-ring and popet each time I keg. Well not last time and a popet got stuck open on one of my 3 gallon kegs. No big deal 'cause we blew the keg, but there was a big WHOOSH of gas when I took that QD off! I had to turn off the gas and remove the gas in QD. I'm really glad there was no beer left in that keg!

Cool!

I should'a guessed that there was a thing called "Keg Lube", but I'm the straight man in the group, and sometimes these things go over my head.

I'll check AHS and NB on my next order.

Thanks!

BUB uses moustache wax on his kegs..... or is it keg lube on his moustache.

Either way it's a creepy looking 'stache.
