Cool, Field.. what'd you brew? Did you get your scoresheet back yet? I have heard that some folks got theirs a few weeks ago, but I haven't gotten anything yet.

Booboo... true about the fruit beer, but notice how it's always from the Sam Adams employee?

it was for a Belgian Pale Ale, I think it might have been a Brewing Classic Styles recipe. The specialty entry was a Vienna lager crossed with an English IPA - done with malt, hops and yeast as expected for a Vienna but brought up into the English IPA range for gravity, IBUs, hop flavor and aroma - that took 3rd for specialty.

I did get the scoresheets back, it was probably 2 weeks ago now. Some of the judges in the early rounds didn't exactly know the styles either. For example I submitted a Dark American Lager and got comments about how there was no roast and it wasn't malty ... so you're saying it meets the guidelines

the employee beer in Longshot is always a fruit beer, but thats because the employee beer is picked by public voting at the GABF, there is always a couple of employee beers that sound great that make it to the final but lose to the fruit beer, I think one last year was a Rye IPA. A 6 pack with 2 Tasty McDole Pliny, 2 Bock, and 2 Rye IPA would kick ass. Now it still kicks ass but it's a 4 pack of awesome beer.
On tap 1: Dry Irish
On tap 2: El Jefeweizen
On tap 3: Vienna
kegged: Rye Amber, Belgian Dark Strong, CYBI Mirror Pond, Irish Red, RIS
lagering: Vienna, Helles, Cream Ale, CAP

Maybe my sheets were held back because of the final round.. hmm. I was curious to see how my other two beers did in their categories.

thats probably what happened, they didn't want to release them early and spill the beans on the champion

Placing anywhere in the specialty category is a feat... who knows what crazy, palate-destroying stuff ends up in there. Not sure if this was in your neck of the woods, but there was a beer at the Willimantic brewpub a while back that sounds a bit like that 'Vienna Ale.' I think it was called Victorian Neighbor.

Willimantic is a ways away, but I try to hit it at least once a year .. after conning the people I'm with that Willimantic is 'on the way' to the casino  - everytime I've gone they've had at least 4 IPAs on tap, never tried the Victorian Neighbor but it sounds great.
