Sam Adams Triplebock

Mon Jan 01, 2007 11:18 am

Since my brewing gear in California and I'm still Jersey, I went out and bought some commercial offerings for the Holidays. I noticed this little 8.45 oz bottle from Sam Adams. Deep violet bottle with only Sam Adams Triplebock on the side. The top was a cork like in a port. Pour was jet black and opaque. Zero carbonation with sweet syrup nose. Sweeter nose than a barleywine or old ale. No hop aroma at all. First taste: SWEET JESUS, THIS IS HORRIBLE! It's like swigging 10 year old Robitussin that was mixed with last week's coffee grounds from Al's Diner.

Stay away from this one...

Wow!

From some one that can make a boston lager like they can, I'm surprised.

Glad you took the bullet for us though.

I have always heard that that stuff was nasty. What did the bottle set you back?

Ok, I'm prepared to be assaulted... I'm not a wine drinker at all, but...

I love the stuff. Mind you, I've only had 3 or 4 bottles of it, 95 and 97, I think.

DON'T THINK BEER. THINK PORT WINE OR SHERRY.

Once you get that into yer head, pour a tiny bit at a time and sip it, you just might love it.

You're right, though. It has zero carbonation and is on the sweet side, but oh momma is it complex.

molasses, plum, sherry, soy, maple, chocolate, toffee, wood and a million others.

ship your unopened bottles over here.

P.S. I'm not gay.

I think I have 3 bottles left . Im unsure what years since I havnt touched them lately. I did open one xmas eve. 95 bottle. Yup still tastes like dark chocolate soy sauce.
You are right though . Sip and let the flavors come out. It gets better as it warms up. Or just pour on pancakes . that might help it

That's cool, code. But, I haven't ever heard of this stuff. It was in the beer isle. It's called Triplebock which led me to believe that is was an imperial version of a doppelbock. Of which it clearly is not. My reaction is more from shock. I tried this stuff a couple times (because it is 4 bucks a bottle) and still couldn't be won over. BTW, I like port and madera with a cigar.

The store I bought it from has a big shelf of it. If you like, I can go by and pick some up if you are interested.
