Attempt at a Triple

Tue May 27, 2008 3:41 pm

I was brewing over the weekend, and had a bit of a crowd, about 6 others who were drinking and distracting. It was great fun, but I realized after I finished brewing my Triple, that I only added 1/2 of the Liquid Malt Extract. I added 5 pounds at the start of the boil and meant to add the other 5 pounds at the end of the boil. My mistake. I couldn't figure out why the gravity was so low.
I know no I only added half of the fermentables. So my question is... what style of beer did a just make? A pathetic excuse for a triple? A Belgian pale ale? A Blonde? The IBU's will be pretty high, 40-50. Also I pitched a yeast started intended for a beer wit ha gravity of 1.070-1.080. What possible effect will this have on the beer?
Any thoughts would be appreciated, and if there are any similar stories, I would love to hear them, so I don’t feel like the only idiot out there.
Anyways, thanks for your thoughts,
Patrick

Can't you boil up the rest of the extract and add it to the fermenter? I've heard some brewers add additional fermentables to high gravity beers during the course of fermentation so the yeast doesn't get too stressed out.

Yeah you could try adding the malt now, but unless you have a large enough fermenter to hold the extra water you might just deal with it and brew the recipe again.
