Heading agent - gum arabic - anyone try this?

Sun Dec 16, 2007 5:53 pm

I am thinking of trying gum arabic to increase head retention. Has anyone tried this? Does it work for kegging? Does it add any taste at all to the beer? Found it in the B3 catalog -AD360.

I briefly considered using Viagra but decided this was way too expensive per 5 gallon batch.

I've used it on my last few beers (all kegged). It seems to give an improvement. I really like head, so I consider it a reasonable expense.

A lot of people dont think gumming would be any good for head, but once you give it a try you might find you like it.

Anyone? Anyone?

Okay, I'll take it ...

I'm not sure I like the words "gumming" and "head" in the same sentence! I guess it's better than "biting" and "head" though.

I prefer using wheat, carapils or carafoam for head retention. Those all seem to provide a nice head retention on my beers.

This would be good for glutton-free beer, since wheat is a no-no.
