Temp Control Method

Thu Dec 13, 2007 4:21 pm

So who's doing what?

I know alot of people are probably doing the temp controlled fridge. I'm in a kind of intermediate step right now. I've got a digital Ranco controller that's hooked to a fan. The fan is pointed at my carboy with 2 wet t-shirts. The carboy is sitting in the tub with water about 1/3 of the way up. It works pretty well except that right now I've got a digital fan that only comes on by pushing the button. It still will drop the temp at least 10 degrees below ambient which will keep me right at 62 for my hefeweizen. I'm thinking that with a little ice in the tub I might be able to do a lager.
I think I've had about enough beer tonight...Now I need some Whiskey to sober up

That's a pretty creative idea, Betty Crocker! I might have to give it a try next summer.

Right now I use an old fridge for lagers, but it's in the garage and doesn't work in the friggin cold MN winters (I would have to heat that sucker to lager). My next project is to build one of those Styrofoam boxes and use the air from my cold air return in the basement - why not use the infinite supply of cold MN air? I have a simple circuit that I can use for temp control along with a computer fan. I also plan on storing a bunch of kegs in a separate compartment.
