Trial and error are the best things. I talked to a few brewers and looked into how I wanted to brew ( allgrain vs partial mash vs extract) and also had to consider my budget. I knew that I couldn't afford to make a metal sculpture. So I would have to design a wood one. I also knew that I couldn't afford a pump just yet, so it had to be gravity fed. That dictated the style. Now I needed to know what the width and hights would be. I decided the width based on the widest piece of my equipment ( the mash tun cooler) and kept it the same size all the way down. I also had to consider the lowest point based on being able to gravity transfer into a carbouy. Starting at the bottom and working my way up, I just kept adding hight as needed. Everything after that is cosmetic and gadgets. That's how I got mine. It's not pretty but it get's the beer made.
