Hello from New York

Thu Apr 26, 2007 12:29 pm

Hello from Manhattan.

I have have caught up on the shows and have been lurking in the forums for a while and thought it was time I joined in.

Living in a small 2 bedroom with a wife, 2 kids and no outdoor space makes it kind of tough to brew. I stated brewing 5 months ago and I am on my 4th batch (extract). I have been happy with the results so far thanks to the good advice I have found here.

You'll have plenty of room to brew once you get rid of those kids and the wife!

Welcome, Fang!

Obviously the space issue is only a problem if the other people in your household are not strong-armed into loving your hobby as much as you do. There is no reason a bunkbed cannot double as a propane-fired brewstand.

Hi Fang!

5 months ... looks like you started brewing about a month after I did. Right now batch #7 is in primary. I worked in Manhattan from sometime in 2004 to around March 2006. It's kind of weird how NYC can inspire me to say "I love this city!" and "I hate this #$@%ing city!" multiple times on the same day.

One other possible solution to your space problem ... move to PA!

The key to living in NYC is to get away on weekends, especially in the summer when the heat will drive you crazy. I absolutely love this town. It has something for everyone.

I grew up in the suburbs and always imagined raising my kids there. Now I can't imagine raising them anywhere else. It helps that my wife was born and raised here and my girls will learn from her street smarts.

As for my space problem I think I have a solution.

My wife and her brother inherited a vacation shack on Long Island that we are rebuilding. My brother-in-law has expressed interest in making beer. I think we can carve out a space in the basement for a brewery. I would have outside space for brewing. I just need to have him be bitten by the bug like I was. That shouldn't be so hard.

The usual prescription is a couple of bottles of good homebrew, and sitting in on one brewing session. If it doesn't take, hand him a bud light and ask if you can rent some basement space.
