Beer Destinations in Atlanta?

Mon Apr 15, 2013 7:34 am

BNers,

We took a last minute vacation to the North Georgia/Atlanta area this week and I realized I didn't do my homework to find beer destinations. Since the family is with me me, I'm looking for brewpubs or bottleshops that I can work into the plans without being over-the-top with beer.

If you are from the area or know the area, got any suggestions??

Thanks!

In downtown Decatur (one of the towns swallowed up by Atlanta, but very, very close in) there's a world class beer bar called The Brick Store (go upstairs.)

Other than that, Sweetwater is a good brewery in Atlanta. There are several brewpubs around the area, but living 60 miles east of there, I'm not too familiar with them.

Good Luck!

Actually, a really good Atlanta brewpub just came to mind. The Wrecking Bar in Little Five Points has great beer and outstanding food. It's in the basement of an old Victorian house. I think the main floor is used as some kind of event space, or something.

I made it there for the first time on Friday night. Nice selection of Belgians.

The Porter in the Little 5 Points neighborhood of Atlanta is a great beer bar. I prefer it to the Brickstore Pub because they tend to rotate its taps a bit more, but going to either will not be a poor decision. As for bottle shops, Hopcity is probably the best beer store in Atlanta and it doesn't hurt that they are a homebrew store as well.

Sweetwater 420 fest is this weekend, though not necisarilly family friendly. Other than that downtown Decatur or Little Five Points are your best bets, and they're not that far from each other. They 're is some shopping around those places where you could ditch the wife and kids. Check these places out:
Brickstore
Leon's
Twains
The Porter
Five Seasons
Hop City

If you're just in North GA in general and are near Athens I would suggest Terrapin Brewery. They are far better than Sweetwater in my opinion.

Other than that I second most of the other suggestions listed above.

Yeah, I agree about Terrapin, but figured it'd be too far from the Atl area. They just had their 11th anniversary carnival last weekend, and I think a good time was had by all. :D They had a lot of one off casks, as well as some new stuff.

For sure, if you don't mind a little drive, check it out (about an hour from Atlanta.) Tours/tastings are Wed-Sat, 5:30-7:30.
