BJCP Vocabulary site?

Thu Jan 10, 2013 8:10 pm

Looking to expand my vocabulary as I'm taking the BJCP tasting exam...I have judged a few times and generally am able to avoid being repetitive on my descriptions, but the hardest one for me is mouthfeel and describing carbonation levels without the use of the typical "moderate/low-medium carbonation" etc...

my googling skills are failing me and i can't seem to find any good documentation for some good vocab words :)

Cheers!

I'd prefer to receive a 'low/moderate/high carbonation' on a score sheet than overly flowery language that doesn't mean anything.

BJCP has a link for vocabulary but it says it's under construction and has been in the works for two years... I'm looking for a good list with descriptions too. Been doing flashcards for preperation, theres quizlet.com that has some virtual flashcards. I should be taking my tasting exam in Aug. Currently listening to the Session - Nov. 2012 show "Judging Beer" It might have some info worth listening to. :jnj

Randy and I are going to resurrect that project now that we're the new CEP Director/Assistant CEP Director.
First job was to unscrew the issues with the off-flavor training kits. This is next.
There were some issues with the prior comittee members so that's why it was halted.

Please see my post here for some tips on how to improve your score on the exam. Also, if you are looking for more examples of descriptive language, check out Michael Jackson's, Randy Mosher's and Garret Oliver's books. Zymurgy has the commercial calibration article in every issue. Those are all good sources for terminology.

thanks BDawg, glad to hear it will be coming along. after I get certified we plan on running a class in our brew club to hopefully further educate some fellow members, and perhaps even get some more certified members. Care to elaborate on the off flavor training kit issues? I was planning on purchasing one to use at our club meetings after i get certified. We used the kit in the class I took recently and I was not able to perceive quite a few of the "faults" however i have been able to perceive them in real beers.

well, i agree with you that flowery language just for the sake of being flowery is annoying, but if i can use more words to expand on the carbonation I think it helps paint a more accurate beer of what I was presented to taste and judge, that way you'd at least get a good idea that what I had was the same, similar, or vastly different from what you thought you bottled and submitted.

Cheers!
