Club by-laws,and absentee voting

Wed Aug 08, 2012 7:22 am

Quick question.....does your homebrew club, or any other club for that matter, have written into your by-laws anything about absentee voting, and if so, how is it worded?? Our club is reviewing/updating our by-laws, and I'm curious as to how other clubs handle this.

Thanks

In our club, you have to be there to vote. Otherwise, It'll drag on forever.

In our club, you have to be there to vote. And it still drags on forever...

Voting was pretty quick as I recall this year... they just handed out a slip of paper to all members in attendance, write your votes in there then drop them in the basket as they came back around. I think the write-in voting took place during a tech talk.

Our voting was a little more informal. We started by asking "who wants to be president?". When nobody raised their hand, the current president said he wouldn't mind serving another term. There was general consensus and he was reelected without any real vote. The other offices were filled about the same way.

Our ballots have only one name for each office and no space for a write in, so no smart ass puts in I.P. Freely or something like that.

Hey, Mr. Freely did an excellent job on his last term.

Well, here was my contention.

We formed a committee to update the by-laws. I was on the Board of Directors, and therefore, also on the by-law committee. I proposed a change, that would allow for absentee voting by active members, but only for major issues...(by law changes, etc), so if work, or something came up, and a very active member in the club, would not feel like their voice was not being heard. Granted, if you were not in attendance, and a motion came to the floor, (let's go to X festival)...you would not get to vote if not present.

I didn't feel like this was too far of a stretch, and would not get used very often, most major decisions were motioned one meeting, then tabled for a vote until the following meeting, usually people could attend one or the other. Also, we had a club forum where these types of matters were discussed, so it's not like someone would walk into a meeting and be blindsided with a vote on something.

Anyway, the "Charter Members" aka Founding members, basically told us to shut up and color...in the corner, that this was their club, and they were not gonna let others (board members) make decisions they did not feel were in the best interest of the club. This discussion went back and forth for over a week, with out any of them giving any concessions. All I was asking for was to write it in the proposed by-law changes....and let the members vote on it....if they voted it down, fine, but THEY never let it get that far!

So, all that being said.....I turned in my letter of resignation last Friday night at the meeting.....therefore, I now am officially club-less.......well, except for you asshats.....MY club is now THE BREWING NETWORK....once again!!!!
