ABV calculated from OG and FG - how accurate?

Thu Jul 05, 2012 8:06 pm

Just wondering how accurate my calculated ABV is based on OG and FG. Because my 5% abv homebrew seems to bring on a buzz much more effectively than a 5% commercial beer.

Of course that begs the question of how accurate my OG and FG measurements were, but since there's no way to do anything about those at this point, let's just assume they were accurate.

you are not going to get a better answer without expensive lab equipment.... just make sure your equipment is calibrated and it should be pretty close...

131.25 * (og-fg) should be +/- 0.5% or less deviation.. which is plenty good enough for gove-ment work as i like to say!

I know it's been said that fusel and higher alcohols contribute to hangovers, but does anyone know of their effects on inebriation?

Nope, but they sure do tend to leave me somewhat blind in the morning. Temp control is a must!
