Sour smelling starter

Sun Oct 23, 2011 11:18 am

So I was just about to get started brewing this afternoon and checked on my starter. I gave it a little sniff and there was a very sharp sour smell to it. I tasted it and didn't get any sour flavors but there was a definite sour smell. Could this be my first infected starter? Thought I would check before I chucked or pitched it.

It was WL002 on a stir plate

I've actually noticed this several times with 002. I figure it's probably high amounts of acetaldehyde. I am not an expert on sours but i think it would take a bit longer to get an appreciable sour smell.

Whatever it actually is, I have pitched several 002 starters that had that smell and never Had any of those beers end up infected.

Thanks! That does seem to be the common consensus.
