Cutting Kegs Help

Mon Jun 06, 2005 3:30 pm

Ok... I have my new angle grinder and i want to use it to cut the top out of my "legaly" purchased from LHBS, retired keg. The instructions say I need to use a type 27 wheel for cutting, the question I have is what thickness is best for cutting on a keg? 1mm 2mm 3mm 1/8" 1/4" ect... ???

Thanx in advance.

I find

I find that a plasma cutter works better. take it to a metal shop with one, pay 10 or 20 bucks to have it cut. They'll grind off any shards and you will have a clean, round cut.

+1 to the plasma cutter, but if you really want to do it yourself .045 stainless/ mild steel cut off wheels from Sait will do the trick (they have a red labeling, the silver ones are for aluminum). If you don't have one, BUY A FACE SHIELD ! not just safety glasses (10 years in the welding trade, my .02 cents)

I used a recip saw and a metal blade to cut and then used a small grinder to smooth the edges.

I'm with gumby, I also used a recip. saw with metal blades. It went quick and easy. Cleaned it up with a grinding wheel on my drill.

Yea, I think it took three blades. The one thing I noticed, by the third blade ofcourse, was that the slower I went the less it burned up the blade. The first two made it threw about half and the last made it threw the other half.

...but if you do take it for the plasma treatment...dont forget to have them(or you) put in some water in the bottom so as not to get any unwanted slag...
