Janet's Black?

I am brewing a new batch of Janet's Brown for a comp, also thinking about entering another comp under a black IPA / CDA. While I'm not crazy about the style, it seems like a Janet's Brown recipe + some carafa might yield a nice beer that would fit into the CDA style. How much carafa III would you add to change the color enough to get it blackish? My thought is that I could add say 3% carafa III, if not dark enough I could later add sinamar to darken it. Ignoring the futility in all this, anyone tried something similar?

I've done it. Actually, my first time brewing this recipe I thought the color estimate in my brewing software looked a little light so I added about 4 oz in a 6 gallon batch. I loved it. It still wasn't quite "black" so I'd probably up that to 8 oz if you want it to pass as a "black ipa".

But seriously, Janet's brown doesn't have quite the right malt character for a good example of a black IPA. But that said, a good beer that's a little out of style still tends to do better than a bad beer that's to style.
