I don't think that you could reliably say that your hydrometer was on or off based on calculated gravity of a controlled wort. Even with extract, we are assuming a particular ppg, and if that is off only by a bit, it may give you a false reading (of a few points), plus factoring inaccuracies of weight and volume to make up that wort, etc. As far as I know, a hydrometer that reads correctly on straight water SHOULD read accurately at all other gravities (assuming that the people that made it have the right scale) since all other gravities are relative to water.
