Brewed with Citra 1st time

Fri Nov 05, 2010 1:08 pm

Brewed with Citra yesterday.
I used it as a last late addition gave it about 5 minutes then mucked the glim and chilled. The smell, when I opened the bag, made me wonder if it was one of the cat piss hops.

Don't panic. I think Citra smells mango-like, and has a citrusy tropical flavor. I don't think it's a good bittering hop though.

Just dry hopped an IPA with Citra and it has been a real hit. Great grapefruity aroma and flavor but yeah there might be just a little cattiness in the background.

Well, if I'm lucky I'll get the fruit without the urine. I didn't leave it long, it was in the boil like 5 minutes tops.

I find it to be really fruity along the lines of peach and tangerine. It is great without a lot of cattiness. I have used it many times. Even in a rye beer with the only hop addition was for bittering at 60 mins all the way to 4 oz dry hop in a DIPA. It is a great hop.

Embrace the Citra!

I actually find it gets that mango flavor as the beer warms

It's so good. I love that hop.

Every citra-hopped beer I have ever knowingly had has tasted like cat piss to me. I think they are the only beers I have not been able to finish ever.

I have a friend that loves citra hopped beer though. I guess it really depends on the person.

To me a it brings out passionfruit and juicy-fruit gum character.
