Starter never krausened

Fri Jul 30, 2010 8:14 am

I had my starter going on a stir plate (1.5L) for 24 hours (wyeast 2206) and never saw any krausen on the top. I chilled overnight anyway and tasted the wort in the am. It was still pretty sweet but it did have some carbonation and some beer like flavor. I also noticed the yeast turned my starter wort (pilsner DME 1.040) pretty brown. This is my first time using this strain. I added 1.5 L fresh starter wort this am and am brewing right now. Should I pitch this? My only other option is heading to my LHBS and grabing some Saflager S23. The beer is JZ's oktoberfest from bcs.

Thanks
PB

Starter kreusen is often very short in duration and easy to miss. You are probably fine to pitch it.

What kind of stir plate are you using? My homemade one was pretty underpowered and always showed krausen. I've done 2 starters so far on a lab grade stirplate on a low setting and now I never seem to see krausen. Mileage varies I suppose.

If you starter wort appears brown then maybe that is the yeast up in suspension still if it is on the stirplate. I think you would be fine to pitch it.
