B3's Keg System

After looking at all of the keg systems available online, it looks like b3 has the best price on a complete package. I did notice though that their kegs are used. Has anyone bought used kegs from b3 before. It says they have replaced most of the parts that need it but what about the soda residue. Is it hard to get out, or do they clean it there. The last thing I want is a root beer stout.

I bought 2 used kegs on eBay, and they turned out just fine after I washed them out and changed out all the rubber o-rings (don't worry, it's so simple to do it wouldn't even confuse Justin... well maybe Justin, but you can't go on that).

I would imagine B3 takes even better care of their kegs than this dealer on eBay, so you should be just fine. If you are really concerned just take it all apart and clean it all with a toothbrush and a concentrated PBW solution.

Run some water through it and taste it. If you taste soda in the water, you will taste it in the beer.

I have made a root beer stout and it is very good mind you!

But as far as used soda kegs go, from what i know, as long as there wasn't root beer in there before (other sodas are ok) the o-rings can be cleaned and re-used if you wish without leftover flavor. I have also seen kegs online that were previousely used as carpet cleaners, I would recommend that before buying one from an unreputable source, you make sure they didnt previousely have chemicals in them.

As someone who helps out at a homebrew shop I would bet B3 cleans the used kegs and changes the seals, we do on every keg we get in. In fact we just got a bunch in forming what we call "the wall of kegs" I drool and think about kegging again everytime I see them. Sooooo sick of bottling...just need to replace my broken computer first.

B3 sells rebuilt and no rebuilt kegs. The rebuilt will have the seals replaced, the others won't. I imagine they are pretty clean though. I have never bought a keg that was hard to clean from anyone though.

They should be clean, but you should clean again anyway. It's pretty simple. After each use I break down the enitre keg, throw all of the parts into the keg (lid too) and fill with PBW solution (about 3tbs per keg). Let it soak for a few hours then dump or rack cleaner, rinse everything and reassemble.

Once you get the keg take it to the hardware store and buy the correct socket to remove the posts. It's the only tool you'll need.

I just purchased this kit: http://morebeer.com/product.html?product_id=18190 and an extra used keg. The keg in the kit was referbished and clean as a whistle. All the O-Rings looked great. The used keg was not referbished but everything checked out fine. I did clean all parts with PBW and of course sanitized them as well. I have one beer on tap, a Mild, and one on deck conditioning away.

I ordered the outfit right in the middle of there wine rush so it took a llittle while longer to get than normal (JP and I had a few email conversations about that) but they took good care of me.

So, I am saying I recommend you purchase your keg outfit from B3.

BTW - it looks like the keg outfit is out of stock until October.
