Yeast Starter with Corn Sugar instead of DME?

Sat Jun 05, 2010 6:53 pm

Anyone know if my yeast starter will be OK if I make a 2 liter starter with 200 grams of corn sugar and 1 gram of yeast nutrient and 2 white labs vials on a stir plate? Thougt I had DME but didn't? Do I need to treat it differently when I use it? More important to decant it?

Nope it will not be ok....You will make the yeast lazy and they will no longer be able to process complex sugars...wait and get some DME..

Ah well. I knew even as I was doing it something wasn't right about it... I rehydrated some safale us-05 instead of using the wlp029 from the starter. It'll still be good.
