trip to minneapolis

Wed Jun 02, 2010 11:08 am

So I'm getting ready for my trip to nhc and am hopping that I might get some advice on places go and things to see with the little bit of free time I planned into my trip. I will be coming up on Tue and am thinking about trying the meterbratwurst challenge at
Gasthof zur Gemutlichkeit as seen on Man Vs. Food. Maybe we could have a pre pre event there seeing as they have das boot it could be a good time for a Tue night.
Also looking at some of the Diner Drive Inn and Dive locations like Donatelli's, Psycho Suzie's Motor Lounge, Al's Breakfast, Town Talk Diner, Bryant-Lake Bowl, etc.
So I am hoping some locals could help me decide were to spend my little free time to enjoy the city. Things like were to get the best jucy lucy, best strip clubs, places to see, things to do, other places to eat and drink that haven't been mentioned in the forum yet.
Just wanting to get the most out of my trip and hoping for some help for a first time visitor.
Thanks

Hmmm, I can try to help.

Gasthof's and Psycho Suzi's in NE are relatively close to each other, but not close to the host hotel(but perhaps you have a car). I've never been the Psycho Suzi's, but I have a generally unnatural fear of Gasthof's: The Keller Bar in the basement makes me claustrophobic, and it feels like a giant frat party. Other people LOVE it.

Town Talk Diner is in south Minneapolis, and in the general proximithy to the best place to get a Jucy Lucy, Matt's Bar. Of course, "best" is always up for debate, but if you want to try more Jucy Lucy's, you can always try the Blue Door pub for a "Blucy" in St. Paul.

Speaking of the Blue Door Pub, it's kind of close to great beer bars in St. Paul, The Happy Gnome and The Muddy Pig. I like the Muddy Pig, mainly for it's dive bar atmosphere. Both have great beer selections.

The Bryant Lake Bowl is in uptown(south of downtown, closer to the host hotel), and it's your normal great beer bar/bowling alley/hipster hangout. It's also right around the corner from the Herkimer, a brew pub brewing German styles. Some people hate their beer for some reason, but I love a few of the styles(kolsch, dunkel and gose) but don't care for a few others. I've spent WAY too much time there.

A few places not to miss in Minneapolis are Town Hall Brewery and Stub and Herb's, both located just northwest of downtown mpls, on the U of M campus. Al's breakfast is also on campus, but I have no idea about their hours, but it probably would be a good time to visit due to the lack of college students around during the summer.

I rarely go to strip clubs, but I've heard you can't beat The Seville in terms of talent.

Yeah I Agree Gasthof's is cool cause they have Das Boooooooot!...But that place is sketch...I went there once and will probably not go back..I almost got into several fights because of drunk bastards and saw quite a few other fights, it gets a little out of control in the basement(but if that is what you are looking for go right ahead).

Al's breakfast is awesome, if you can get a seat, sometimes the line goes out the door and it seats maybe 8-10 people inside.

I hear town hall brewery is cool, but I actually haven't been yet (soon though), Stub and herbs is good and has a decent selection of beers.

If you can get there the Happy Gnome looks very cool though again I have not been there yet..

I hear nothing but Amazing things about Seville, though I have not been, now a few who have though and they rave about it if you want to see beautiful naked woman ;)

If you are in St. Paul, you must go to the Muddy Pig (almost a dive) and Happy Gnome (upscale) and Sweeneys (just because). The Blue Door has decent lucys. In downtown Minneapolis Town Hall, MacKenzie's, Stub & Herb, and Black Sheep for great pizza (thin crust). If you like ethnic food, go to Blue Nile for ethiopian and a suprisingly great beer list (surly dipa) or True Thai in the Sewerd area (franklin & 24th +-). +1 on seville for talent.
hope this helps

I love this thread. I've been scouring Man v. Food and DDD to find places to visit. The meterbrat challenge is what I have been contemplating Saturday night, since my beer sucks and didn't advance. I'm thinking about taking that challenge Saturday night.
