Here is how I found the best way to crash cool a beer before lagering. Replace the 3 piece airlock with an s-shaped airlock (sanitized of course). Fill the s-shaped airlock with a small amount of vodka (even if it does get sucked in, it will only add to the abv and nothing else). Place in fridge and cold crash below 40 degrees for 2-3 days before kegging/lagering. Reason - a 3 piece airlock will suck the fluid in as pressure change occurs when cooling. I have never had it happen to me with an s-shaped airlock. Just to be sure to avoid anything getting in the beer, I still place a sanitized piece of foil over the airlock opening just in case the vodka does get sucked in (which it never has).
