How long to wait before pitching more yeast?

Sat Dec 12, 2009 5:07 pm

I brewed a smoked porter yesterday. It's been 24 hours and there are still no signs of fermentation. How long should I wait before pitching more yeast? I used Danstar Nottingham the first time around and I'll probably pitch some more dry yeast, if necessary. The only thing I can think might be happening is that the fermenter was a little cold (62F) for a while and I've now moved it somewhere warmer.

Wait another day, it'll be fine.

I thought Nottingham had some bad batches lately?

Did you rehydrate your yeast? How much did you pitch for your gravity? If it doesn't start by tomorrow morning, I would pitch some more yeast just to be sure. 36 hrs. for me is usually when I would repitch if I don't see any activity. Good luck, and don't worry, it will probably take off after it warms up a bit.

After over 100 batches I too got hit with the SLOW start up. Made up 1000ml starter on a stir plate of Whitelabs W320 American Hefeweizen Yeast, pitched the whole thing after 18 hrs and after 24 hours nothing??? I'm used to start ups after 4 to 5 hours. Worried
Where did time go?

On tap- Munich Helles, Janet's Brown, Lagunitas IPA clone
Fermenting- Nelson Sauvin/ Summit IPA

Patience... your christmas will be complete with a rocky fermentation in a few hours. You aerated your wort right?

Yeah it got going within another day. I've tested the beer a few times since and it tastes just fine. I didn't rehydrate, but usually don't with no difficulty. I think the problem was lack of aeration. I'm still doing the rock the carboy method and I don't think I shook it enough. Thanks for the help.
