I don't know what it is with those guys. I tried to like the stuff because they sponsor Robert Earl Keen, and I'm an REK fan to the bone, but I just couldn't get into it. Can't remember why. I'll pick up a six on the way home and re-test.

Then you can't not like a good Shiner... I CALL SHENANIGANS!

I'm not saying it's the be-all, end-all of beer... but you have to admit, for a easy drinking dark lager, it's pretty damn good. Granted, I usually have to let it warm up a bit since bars/restaurants like to serve it ice cold and in an iced mug... but after that, I get some great dark lager characteristics and really enjoy it.

Now, Ziegenbock, the Anheuser-Busch replica of Shiner, is another story. I find it a bit watery and some of the flavors a bit more washed out.

+1 on Ziggie. I used to drink Lone Star because my dad work for the local distributor. When they closed the San Antonio brewery and moved production to Longview, every time I drank one, there was an odd sensation in my throat, like swallowing a large tortilla chip without chewing. So I quit drinking it. Now that Miller makes it in Fort Worth it's okay. I still don't drink it though.

Back in the late '70s or early '80s Schlitz built a brewery just south if I-20 in Longview. Then Schlitz was bought out and turned into Strohs, then Strohs moved the brewery over north of the interstate, and when Strohs went tits-up it was closed. Last I heard it still was.

Are you sure they make Lone Star in Longview?

Back in the '80s Longview was the best smelling town I had ever been to.

EDIT: Nevermind. I just read the rest of your post, so I guess the Longview brewery is still dead. Damnit!

Lone Star is owned by Pabst. I didn't know Miller made Pabst! Guess that's just another case of contract beer (which I consider to be a species of cheating).

There was quite an uproar when Lone Star left San Antonio. When Pabst closed the Longview plant, Lone Star went to the Pearl Brewery for a few years, which was Pabst's HQ. When Pabst closed that plant, the entire Pabst portfolio for the region went to the Miller brewery in Fort Worth. I think Pabst only owns one brewery in the MidWest. Everything else is contract brewed.

I cut my beer teeth in south Texas on Shiner bock on tap at the Showdown in San Marcos. Loved the stuff.

I really, really think that Shiner suffers as it ages. I haven't checked (since I don't often drink it anymore) but I'd be willing to bet that if there were freshness dates on there, we'd be able to judge it better. To quote a friend - "Sometimes drinking Shiner products is a great experience, others you wonder why the hell they even bothered." I've always contended it's too old when it tastes shi**y. Not that it's gods gift to beer when fresh, but it's still serviceable.

Any of you Texans remember Lone Star Bock? $3.99 a sixer at Randalls back in the 90's. Long gone, though.

I do indeed remember Lone Star Bock. In fact, thanks to my dad, who was a LS salesman, I have an old LS Bock mirror on the wall.
