Gotta Be A Better Way to Get DME into a Flask...

Fri Aug 14, 2009 6:47 pm

So I bought 2 five Liter Erlamyer Flasks about 3 weeks ago and have done 2 staters with them. Damned nice to have a step eliminated as far as transeferring the Wort from a Pot into a 1 Gallon Plastic Jug. But, I am at a bit of a cross Roads here. I can not find a way to get the DME into the Flask with out using something. And whatever I use, I always wind up with wet DME on the item I use to pour the DME into the Flask with (Funnel, Paper Tube, Aluminum Foil). Then I wind up adding about another 1/2 liter of water into the flask to get the rest of the DME that is stuck to the Funnel (what I have chosen) into the flask. Hence, my staqrter is not where I want it to be as I am now 1/2 liter over in the water department. What am I missing here? How do you add your DME to your Erlamyer Flask?

BTW, yes I do take the Flask off the heat prior to adding the DME.

How about mixing some hot water with the DME in a separate large container (e.g., bowl or pitcher with a spout) with a whisk, and then pouring it in and topping off with whatever water you need? That works for me. :)

I would simply mix the DME with water first and then pour it into the flask. Much easier to make sure it is completely dissolved and much easier to get into the flask without making a mess.

That's what I do now and it make life so much easier use 1/2 the liquid for my starter in a SS bowl mix the DME in there then add back in to the flask much easier and a lot less mess that trying to ad DME in the flask

It's always the simplest answer that is always the hardest to reach. Thanks for the tip!!!

Yep, I do a variation on that myself. I pour about 1500 ml into a small saucepan, heat and stir until it is dissolved. Then I pour it through a funnel into the flask and top it off, as necessary.

I have a teeny tiny funnel (99 cents at your local hardware). I put the dry flask onto my scale, tare and pour DME through the funnel into the flask to the right weight. I add water to the appropriate level, then swirl to combine and boil.

This doesn't solve your problem of wanting to eliminate your funnel, but it won't result in sticky DME funnel syndrome either.

I weigh mine out on wax paper or Al. Foil and I add it dry. That way there's no moisture and it doesn't stick to anything. I'll then add the water and boil while swirling the flask (fermcap added).

I personally never really understood all the people trying to mix it up hot with water.
