Iron Brewer Challenge

Fri Aug 07, 2009 4:45 pm

Our brew club just had it's forth annual Iron Brewer competition.

Inspired by the Food Network's Iron Chef, the Cascade Brewers Society Iron Brewers once again took to the Brewhouse Stadium to battle for the fame and honors bestowed upon those are deemed champion Iron Brewers.

Four 2 brewer teams each formulated and brewed a beer of which incorporated the secret ingredient.

Previous years secrets ingredients included licorice, ginger, raisins, various sugars, Minute Rice, Summit hops, and yeast donated by Wyeast.

Each team was allowed to bring up to 14lbs of base malt, 3lbs of specialty grains, 6oz of hops and 2 yeasts.

This year we mixed it up a bit and confiscated each teams specialty grain and then distributed them back by lottery.

Here are a few picts. More pictures can be viewed at my Facebook page.

Cheers,
Tom

Sounds a lot like the IronMash comp we have in TX. It is pretty cool we get 4 special ingredients and an unknown set of grains and we have to brew it and pitch before we leave the parking lot. Of course it is in july in TX so it is HOT, This year we had Lemon Balm, Cranberries, Serrano Peppers and Star Anise Seed. This is the 8th Annual this year.

is that a sparge arm-ish thing mounted to the underside of the cooler lid? THAT is a really good idea if it is...i sense some frankensteining going on today!

Yes, that's the sparge arm. He pokes it through the lid of the cooler where he attaches the hose connected to the kettle.
