Sanitary practices... fermcap -s

Sat Jun 27, 2009 11:54 am

So, I justed used some fermcap in my starters to prevent boil over... worked wonders.

Now, I am using smaller flasks (a 500ml and 1000ml) and was worried about a krausen pushing up and out - this only happened to me once when I put entirely too much good healthy yeast into a 2000ml flask, and it freaked out over the course of 4 hrs - but alas. I don't have a stirplate to keep in knocked down... im not taht worried, but do people use fermcap right into their starters/fermentations with no concerns of infection? I am pretty sure that is what is was initially intended for... but I've always wondered. I pretty much have only used it for the boil.

I use it in my starters ( pre boil) and it works to prevent boil overs during the boil AND during the fermentation of the starter. I love it. Can't get enough of it.

I use it in my fermenting beers too, same idea..put some in the boil and it prevents boil overs and blows during fermentation.

I used to get a blowoff (or nearly so) on 2 beers out of 3. Since I started using Fermcap S a year ago, I haven't need my blowoff tube since. Now that I think about it, I'm not even sure where it is at the moment. :?
