NB Pilsen Extract

Fri May 29, 2009 7:17 am

Any experience with Northern Brewer's Pilsen LME? I am a partial-extract/mash brewer but when I get home from deployment, I want to kick 10 gallons of Tripel as soon as possible. I have a large enough pot to mash 25-30 lbs of pilsner malt and an all-grain recipe, but was thinking of taking a short-cut and kicking out 10 gallons from exract and then ferment 1/2 with WLP510 and 1/2 with WLP530. Plus it'll cut down the time and let me dial in the evap rate on my my new 15-gallon pot.

Feedback plz....will I be sorry I did not mash my grains?

I used it earlier this year in a Belgian Pale Ale (JZ's recipe) and it turned out great. I'm actually using the NB Pilsen again this weekend for a Golden Strong Ale. I'd recommend it.

Thnx Oppie. I ended up ordering a 40 lb sack of pilsner malt from Austin Homebrew and am going to shoot for an all-grain 10-gallon batch. It's probably a good thing I did not order the extract, since my dog attacked the package on the doorstep (grain re-ordered) and the grain was everywhere...had it been extract he'd of needed a batch for sure. More importantly, he did not eat the hop pellets, looked like he grabbed a couple bags but did not tear them open or eat them. That would have been bad.

Thnx...it is especially bit since it will be a small celebration (by me) of my return from deployment.

Cheers...

Welcome back!!

I tried the NB/Briess Amber LME - not happy with it. I am trying a Belgian Wit now with the Light and Wheat Breiss - will post back.

Have a good time brewing!
