Irish....Brown?

Sun May 17, 2009 12:55 pm

I did the BCS Irish Red last night. The numbers were right in line with the BCS recipe and Beer Smith even showed me that a 17 SRM was fairly Brown.

Sure enough, this is a brown beer.....

Will this thing turn red at all during fermentation?

The first thing that comes to mind is to check the lovibond of the roasted barley you used. I think Jamil's recipes sometimes call for 350L roasted barley when very often the stuff you are likely to get at the LHBS is around 500L.

Good point.... Damn! I hope it's lower than 500. I like proper color on my beers.

Thing is... It pretty much matches the color in beer smith.

Just called my LHBS. his Rahr Roasted Barley is 300. I used 3% of the bill of it.

We'll see how she turns out

I have made about 5 or 6 Irish reds with varying results. My first one was close to the BCS version and it was a much better Southern Brown than an Irish red. After playing around with the crystal and roasted barley, I was able to come up with a version that was adapted to my brewing system. I think that the trick to a red ale is brewing it until you have the ingredients dialed into your system.

IMHO.

Hey BigNasty,

I brewed the BCS Irish Red on Thursday night. Mine is very dark. How dark? I'm not sure, I brew at night. It looks pretty dark in the fermenter though. We should trade a few bottles when they are ready.

Sounds good to me. I brewed last night. My first night brew in a couple months. But, yeah...mine is pretty dark as well.

My Irish Red came out very brown. Still tastes good. Just wrong color.
