Hop/Trub stopping..

Sat Jun 17, 2006 12:07 pm

I read on a forum somehwere, not sure if it was here but I dont think so, about a simple idea to keep hops and (maybe) break material out of your fermentor.

Take one regulation nylon knee high stocking (new of course), Sanitise, poke mostly into carboy and fix in place around the neck with a sturdy rubber band. Fill carboy as normal and when you are finished pull out the stocking along with all the hops etc.

I can't see a reason why it wouldn't work, seeing as it sounds like a few of you guys are using nylon stockings as bags to dry hop with, they obviously wont let them through.

What does everyone think?

a similar one is to take some steel wool type pot scrubber, boil it to sterilise and shove a chunk in the back of your tap/faucet/spigot on the mash tun or kettle.
kegged-one light summer ale
kegged- one ordinary bitter
bottled- celebration ale
fermenting- ordinary bitter

That seems to me like it would work great. I always have a problem with getting crap into my fermenter, then I always have a problem with getting crap into my secondary if I use one on that batch, then I have a problem getting crap into my bottling buckett, then I have a problem getting crap into my bottles. If I could get rid of the crap in step one - - - - - WOW what a concept..

Based on the one time I tried to dry hop in a carboy with a hop sock, I think you will have a very interesting time getting that ox scrotum sized back of splooge back out of the carboy without ripping the bag and spilling it all back in!

If you do try, please do take photos and narrate as you are doing it!

That's what I was thinking... with all the left over stuff at the bottom, I can see that sock becoming a nice softball sized lump that won't fit very well back up through a carboy neck.

I usually just brew an extra gallon or so of wort so when I pour into my fermentor I can do so slowly and only get the good stuff on the top, and leave the crud with some leftover wort.

Of course it never feels right to dump out unused wort afterwards...

I was thinking less of just slurping all the sploodge (nice word.. :D ) into the carboy, than of still whirlpooling and trying to avoid the trub, but with the stocking to catch the bits of crap that inevitably sneak through.

Now that I've made myself a conical though, maybe I will have to modify the stocking idea and somehow attach the thing to the end of my hose.
