Big Brews for National Homebrew Day May 2nd

Thu Apr 09, 2009 10:23 am

Hey, who else is having a Big Brew locally for National Homebrew Day?

Our club in the Lehigh Valley has moved ours to May 9th due to the venue (aka, this guy's farm that we use) not being available May 2nd. The club is doing an Apple Brandy Barrel Saison as the group for those who want to (I'm gonna make Murray's Black IPA with the NZ hops instead).

We're celebrating here with an all grain 10 gal. batch of the Saison, a 5 gal. all grain batch of an Irish Red and a 5 gal. extract batch of the mild. There's 5 of us brewing but it should still be a busy day.

I'm planning on having a big group over at my place to do a Saison. It should be decent size crowd, I'll have all 5 taps going on the kegerator with fresh kegs!

You guys making this? http://www.beertown.org/events/bigbrew/recipes.html

I asked our club officers, and they said ours is going to be a bigger Saison, like a Fantome.

We’re going to the local Lumber Barons’ Brew pub http://www.doreriverview.com/lumberbarons.php to do a few brewing demonstrations. We’ve invited a few other clubs, so there should be about 20+ people brewing with methods and systems that run the gamut.
Our club, the Cass River Homebrewers http://www.hbd.org/cassriver owns an old barrel system that one of the local brew pubs used to use, so we’re planning to brew a barrel of Hefeweizen for an upcoming festival (quick turnaround). The rest of the group will be brewing some of the AHA recipes as well as recipes of their own making.
Stop by if you’re in town!

We usually brew in the parking lot at Boscos Brewery. boscosbeer.com They give everyone in the club 7 or 14 gallons of a base wort. usually 95% pale and 5% c80 or something close. They are doing that again this year. The past 2 years I have gotten 14 gallons of 1st runnings and made my barley wine which I will probably do again this year too. White Labs use to donate a vial of yeast to each member of the club and Fresh Hops would donate some hops, but not this year. Boscos will be giving out slugs of their house yeast though. The free wort is great!

I believe that Stone has done this "wort give-away" in the past, and made a competition out of it since each brewer finishes the wort anyway they want. This sounds like a great event.
Perhaps there is a brewery in the Bay Area (Triple Rock) which could do something similar.
