Thanks man. I was planning on the Cascades and Fuggles. That's too bad about the Centennials, I was planning on those too, maybe I'll check out the Crystal.

I'd still give the Centennials a shot. For $5 it's worth a try. I already have another Centennial rhizome on order for this season, I figure sooner or later I'll find one that takes.

If I don't get much of a harvest the first year, that's ok. It will be fun listening to the neighbors talk about me growing weed in plain site :D

Yeah, my plants are in Haverhill, NH... and I didn't get much last year. But then again we had that funky spring.. weird indian summer and then a few late frosts (note, put 12 rhizomes in before that last frost, only 8 came up)...

I made the mistake of putting mine in potting soil, room temp... they took off like bandits inside, so I was anxious to get them outside in the ground.... the only thing that was successful in doing was shocking the shit out of them.

I think in this climate (since it could be suicide to put them out before May 15th), the best way to store them is to wrap them in BARELY moistened newspaper, and put them in your cellar or the like. I hear that's the best way to keep them around until the NH ground is ready to break.

Regardless, my strongest plant was a centennial, gave some flowers... all three Golding's came up, but stunted at 6 ft, and no flowers, and 2 of the Willamette came up in the same fashion. Only one of the magnum came up, but was fairly strong, so... I hope that I can at least get the second year plants to flower with some TLC and the proper fertilizer schedule.

If you guys really want to hedge your bets, I hear putting in 2-3 rhizomes a hill will pretty much guarantee a stronger first year... I was cheap and didn't do anything of the sort though!

I'm giving it a go this year also. Ordered 2 Cascade, 2 Northern Brewer and 2 Goldings and also 1 called sunbeam or sunshine or something. Supposed to be a saaz hybrid with golden leaves. Seemed interesting. I'll probably order some centennials, horizons and maybe some willamette as well. Gonna keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best. Now I just have to figure out how to keep my two pooches away from them.

I have a Sunbeam hop I planted @ five years ago. Grows fine and looks pretty but as far as I can tell it is an ornamental hop variety. I have never gotten anything useful from it. I did buy it as an ornamental so I'm actually pretty happy with it....

you guys are lucky you can order from anywhere you want. I have to buy only from local stores as WA has some pretty strict laws about bringing hops in from other states.
Cheers!
