How long after scrubbing stainless?

Thu May 11, 2006 4:23 pm

My stainless steel kettle had some scorch marks that needed a fair amount of BKF and elbow grease to remove. It was certainly nice and shiny by the time I was done with it. That was about 3 days ago.

How long should I wait before considering the kettle safe to use? Is SS passivation tougher than I think and I really didn't scrub it all off like I would have if it had been Alumium?

Im not sure on your answer but I never scrub hard on my stainless. If I need to get something off I just soak it and lightly brush it off.

Palmer says 1-2 weeks is sufficient for passivating SS.

BKF automatically passivates as part of its action. It's ready to go right now.
Be wary of strong drink. It can make you shoot at tax collectors -- and miss.

How do you use that? Do you mix it with a certain amount of water and scrub, or is it used dry (or just slightly moist, like a paste)?

I didn't know BKF would do that.

Glad to hear it is ready to go, because I used it about 4 days after I scrubbed it!

For light stuff, like the burned on crap on the glass stovetop, I pour some BKF on a damp rag. For serious burns like mash burns in my kettle, I make a paste, let it sit for many minutes to hours, then scrub with the rag.
