Re: Bergamot/Earl Grey beer idea

I would be interested to hear how this goes.

A while back I was considering making a Blonde ale with tea added. What I did was buy a six pack of blonde(forgot what kind) and got out a bunch of tea bags. I made five or six different teas and cooled them down. I was focusing on the Lemon Zinger, Orange and Raspberry type teas so I didn't try this with a Bergamont. I put two teabags in each cup of hot water for about three minutes then pulled the bags out and put the cups in the freezer until they were cold.

I poured a half a glass of beer and added the cooled tea until I could taste the combined flavors. It was a fun experiment but in the end I didn't like any of the combinations as well as I liked the beer alone so when I brewed my Blonde I left out any tea additions. I was going to do what someone suggested and that was to add the tea to my priming sugar so it would go in just before bottling.

You might give it a try. Buy a basic example of the beer style, brew up some tea, mix them together and taste...

the Boston Beer Works Fenway used to have a very creative brewer who would try crazy things like this

One year, she had an Iced Tea beer. It came in a big iced tea glass, over ice, and was a beer brewed to a low OG with tea, think a braggot with tea instead of mead type of mix. Interesting stuff and it was pretty refreshing in the summertime.

if she was still there I'd recommend her to Chad for a show guest - another beer was a gingerbread beer for the winter, they baked like 400 pounds of gingerbread and added it to the mash tun, another one was Peanut Butter Porter
