Greetings,

Long time lurker, first time poster. I discovered BN a couple of days ago and think the site is fantasitc.

I've been brewing sporadically for the past 10 years or so and most of the this time was all grain. I haven't tried anything too fancy as I lack in the equipment and funds department. Plus, I am too lazy and would rather brew than kluge something together.

I do have a question though. I made a pale and finished with some whole Cascade hops once the burner was turned off. I blew off via a hose into a bucket with bleach. When I dumped the blow-off bucket there was a yellow slime on the bottom that seemed pretty oliy. My hunch is that it is hop oils, but I have never seen this before, has anyone else? Opnions?

Don't know about that nasty film... maybe the oils reacted with the bleach? Did ya lick yer finger??

Usually, I am all for putting substances with an odd color or texture in my mouth. However as this stuff survived for a week in bleach, I decided to put it in a biohazard bag and dispose of it according to OSHA regulations.

I'd call it "Hop oil" and move on. If you're beer tastes funny you can revisit it.

If it happens again, then I am going to start collecting it. After a couple of brews, there might be enough to use in future batches. It would be great, resue the hop oils from the finishing hops as a source of alpha acids in the next batch. Repeat as necessary. Now if I could just figure out how to reuse the water from one batch into the next???

when I was living in the Allentown, PA area a few years back there were a bunch of billboards that were advertising "outhouse Springs" recycled water from "waste". one of their slogans was ''It's #1, not #2.'' and a few others that were funny, but i cant remember now. im not sure if it was national or not, but anywoo the whole thing turned out to be an ad campaign for the billboard company to prove that people really do pay attention to them. apparently it worked really well!!!.
