Re: First Brew Question - OK to leave a gallon behind

Rigged it up as suggested. Filled the pot with 6+ gallons of water and it drained again opening the spigot. It stopped at the same place, the bottom of the outlet pipe, did not acheive a siphon. Fittings were pretty tight, but no teflon tape or solder was used inside the kettle.

I guess it would work if I used a march pump to drain out the everything below the invert of the spigot?

I'll post photos.

Siphon is as siphon does. It should't break until the water line hits the top of the dip tube. Check again for air leaks. A pump will just drain it quicker, not drain more.

What an idiot I am. Tightened the compression fitting. Tried it again. Stopped at the same place.

Once I hooked up a short section of hose to the spigot (to get the exit point of the siphon below the bottom of the kettle) it works like a champ!! Instead of a gallon and a quarter there is 2/3rds of a cup of liquid left. I'm happy to give that to the beer gods.

It will never work out of the spigot alone no matter how tight the connection.

Thanks for putting up with the stupid questions.

Two things to think about one how far off the bottom of the kettle is the diptube? If you look the end of his is pinched small and angles down to allmost touching the bottom. Number two this guy uses the jamil whirl pool and he says on another picture caption just a little tilt and the kettle will be empty with the pile left in the middle. Here are some better pictures to show this. If it is needed solder that baby if it is good for water in your house it will be fine for beer.

For you imperial impaired - I went from 1 1/4 gallons (1250ml) of wort left in the bottom to 2/3 cup (150ml). I kinda like this metric stuff - never could remember the tablespoon / cup / gallon thing anyway. Just add a hose to the outside of the spigot after building that thing inside the kettle. After the sun goes down I'll post some photos.

It is the very fancy term for the mixture of grain. I thought it implied that it was crushed - but apparently that's not necessarily true.
