English Pale Ale with Wheat DME as my Starter?

Wed Oct 01, 2008 3:13 pm

So, here's my conundrum. I am doing my starters this evening for an 11 gallon batch of English Pale Ale on Sunday. I always do 2 starters, 1 for each Carboy. Issue this evening is that I have 383 grams for 1 starter, but only 150 Grams of Extra Light DME for the second starter. I do have enough Wheat DME to fill in the rest, but will it affect the flavor of my beer? I will be decanting all the liquid off the Yeast prior to pitching, so I am thinking that it shouldn't be that much of an issue. What do you think?

There is no problem at all with using wheat DME for your starter. The amount used is so small, especially if you decant, it will be virtually impossible to notice.

Actually, a little wheat is not out of place in an English Pale. A half pound to a pound of wheat malt in a 5 gallon AG batch can do wonders for head retention.
Like Bug said, nobody will be able to detect the difference anyway.
