Basic recipe for learning...

Tue Apr 18, 2006 11:13 am

I want to start working with my own recipes and trying to make a great pale.

I had read somewhere that 6 lbs. of pale malt, 1 oz. of bittering hops, and a vile of ale yeast makes a great base recipe, and once it was brewed you can add specialty grain for future recipes to see how the flavors are affected.

I like the idea, I just wanted to know if 6 lbs. seemed like enough grain? It seems that all my recipes use 8-10 lbs. of base malt.

Thoughts?

That sounds like a good enough starter recipe for me to try. I think I'll do 8# just to split the diff. Maybe I'll use a little too much hops in the end for fun. 8) I tend to gravitate to the hoppy side of things, since I am from the west coast( though I'm in Memphis now). I'll try it plain first, then I'll mess with the hops. Thanks Doc.
