Just had Pliny the Younger and Elder at the Liar's Club in Pacific Beach. Preferred the Elder, but here's the question: why is the Younger bright and the Elder cloudy? Any ideas?

Talk about a little taste of heaven.....

I was unable to try the Elder, but I thought that the younger was kinda of hazy. I am wondering if this is result of the excessive hops, I am going to consult Vinnie to see what his thoughts are on the matter.

I had both, back to back, at the Double IPA festival last Saturday in Hayward, CA. I had the Younger first, and while I thought it was an awesome experience, I liked the Elder much more. I have to say, the Younger was surprisingly well balanced for such an extreme beer. While undeniably bitter, it wasn't in an unpleasant way at all. In fact, it comes across more as a strongly hop-flavored beer, rather than a bitter beer. The aroma is amazing. My wife was with me and she asked after a few moments, "So are you actually going to drink it, or just sniff it?".
When it comes to comparing the two though, I think there's one observation that is sufficient: I wanted to go back for seconds with the Elder.

I got a return email from Vinnie and he confirmed the haze in PTY is from the "giant amount" of hops. This also explains why BSOP has a similar haze.

Glad to see I other agree with me. I like the Elder much more. The Younger is a little on the sweet/malty side of balance.

Wezil,
You and me are on the same page. I do like the Younger but it is SO MUCH that at times it is hard to enjoy as a drinking beer as much as it is a sniffing, sipping beer.

The polyphenols from the huge amount of hops makes for the haze, but I don't worry about any of that stuff.

I have had 3 different batches of the younger and found this last batch to be the best.

Can you all tell I love RRBC?

nice to meet you at B3 yesterday. We will have to work out some exchange for some Brett. Beers. Do you make any sour ales too?
Next time you are at RR have a Pazzo for me.

Wezil,
This is getting a little weird. Pazzo is the best of their pizzas.

I am having Deification(Pale Ale W/ Brett) right now.....mmmmmmmmmmmm.

It was good to meet you as well.

I have not made other sour ales, but I imagine I will be in the future.

I noticed what Oz wrote about us who have the fortune to enjoy RRBC ales. So I must come out of the closet.

If I truly am a pirate like he says.......... so be it.
