Fining?

Mon Oct 25, 2010 5:24 pm

I've been listening to some of the brew strong episodes and on one JZ is kinda steering us away from racking into secondary... I guess for contamination reasons?... Anyway I wanted to know if you could add finings to the primary after fermentation is complete? Also does this cause the yeast to drop out too? If so would there still be enough in suspension to bottle condition? Thanks!

Yes you can absolutely use finings in your primary. Chill it down and let it settle for a day or so after fermentation is over, then add finings (i like gelatin) and give it a gentle swirl so it's distributed around the top part of the beer.

Almost the entire purpose of fining is to drop out the yeast... They do virtually nothing else but exactly that. Actual isinglass if used properly will have some effect on chill haze too - but not a lot.

However - they won't drop so much out that there won't still be far more than enough to carbonate your beer. Unless perhaps you have fermented a great big barley wine or something like that, in which case your yeast might be too tired and worn out to do the job... Regardless of how many cells you have.

Fine in your primary with confidence, and bottle, with the same. It'll work with no problems at all.

Great! Bc I'm tired of racking! I will be using the K C superkleer... I've only just started fining on by brew before this one and I like how well this can brighten up a beer! Thanks for all the help!
