Green Flash Westcoast IPA recipe

6 Gal. recipe
OG: 1059
FG: 1014
SRM: 8.8
7.3% alc. vol.
BU: 92 (calculated from the brewery. Home Brew version may be lower)

90 min boil - pre boil volume: 7.7 gal. pre boil gravety:1054
dough in:
14.0 lb(6.35kg) 2-row
1.31 lb (0.594g) Crystal 40
1.31 lb (0.594g) Cara pils

Kettle hops:
Pellet hops
½ oz (15g) Simcoe 90 min (Bump BU up from 25 to 35 BU in the 90 min boil -Nathan's advice)

1/4 oz(8g) Simcoe 60 min
1/4 oz (8g) Columbus 60 min

1/4 oz (8g) Simcoe 30 min
1/4 oz (8g) Columbus 30 min

22g Simcoe 15 min
22g Columbus 15 min

1 oz (28g) Cascade 10 min

½ oz (15g) Simcoe and Columbus at flame out (1. Min)

Dry hop:
½ oz (15g) of Amarillo, Centennial, Columbus, Simcoe, (Cascade).
64F/17.7C for 14 days. Agitate every other day to keep hops in Suspension.

Mash:
152F/67C for 35 min, according to Chuck. Depends on your system and how fast you get to conversion.
Mash out at 168F/76C
Sparge at 170F/77C

Yeast: WLP#001/Wyeast1056
Ferment at 72F/22C

there have been previous posts from last summer with adjusted recipe ideas. I brewed the adjusted beer and it came out great. The OG should be higher than 1.059 anyway. Search for those posts by Nathan/Tasty.

I just wanted to offer my thanks to the CYBI guys for their work on this recipe. I brewed a batch several months ago and was extremely pleased with the result. I followed the recipe pretty much to the letter except that I cut the dry hop quantities in half (I did this because in my past experience with dry hopping I found it to leave too much of a green / grassy note to the beer). I had a few bottles of the West Coast IPA on hand and did a taste test with a few friends and the concensus was that they were very close overall although everyone preferred the CYBI version (mine came out a little less bitter that the Green Flash). Anyway, I entered it in the AHA nationals and got a third place in the Southeast region and, remarkably enough, it took the IPA silver medal in Minnesota! :pop

Did you follow the recipe above, or a different one. This is one of my favorites, but I have a 'local' store that carries it for 7.99 a 6 pack, which if awfully cheap. :drink Considering my recent luck with nasty critters, 8 bucks is way cheaper then me brewing it :?

It is $14.99 per six on this side of the country :oops: . Definately cheaper to make here.

Here is what I gathered from Nathans original post. I brewed this beer a few months ago and it was awesome! You wont be disappointed.

Nathan adds gypsum to the mash. How much I dont remember, but the quantity is irrelevant anyway without knowing what your starting water profile is. Something along the lines of Tasty's water profile he outlines in his APA would be perfect.

I also brewed this recipe, kept it pretty much untouched except I did use Pacman yeast. Came out excellent, one of the best IPAs I've had and took first in competition. This is a great IPA.
