Keg Refurb - cleaning ball threads

Mon Oct 19, 2009 5:28 am

Any suggestions on how to get the inside threads on the ball posts clean? There is some nasty residue in there I cannot scrub or PBW-soak out.

Would I be good to go just boiling them for 15 min and then assembling wet after a dip in Starsan?

Take all the keg pieces and throw them down inside the corny and soak with PBW or Sun Oxygen Cleaner to get the grime off. This usually does the job.

This is keg #8 for me and I just can't get the grime off inside the ball posts....they've been soaking in PBW on and off for weeks now. I have also scrubbed with a small round brush. No luck.

Use some Barkeeper's Friend on that brush. It is an abrasive cleanser that is great for getting stainless clean. It also re-passivates the metal so it's ready to go after cleaning. Look for the powder type in your local big box or hardware store. You might even try a stainless steel bore brush like the style for cleaning guns.

You are more likely to find Barkeepers Friend at your grocery store (with the household cleaners) than at the LHBS.

Use the powder and make a thick paste with it.
