Well, apparently being a sports writer qualifies you to judge beer that will be served at a stadium.... Come on! You didn't know that?!?!

They can judge however they like it; I just think they should be clear if it's being judged differently than what you'd normally expect from a BJCP-sanctioned comp.

Ah well, on to the next one. :)

well you got to enter the right beer in the right competition. For example, the longshot.....a fruit beer is going to be in the winner six pack. Jim Koch is not going to brew your barrel aged belgian blonde ale fermented with 100% brettanomyces lambicus even if it is the best beer ever made. Although, if you made a crappy cranberry lambic, you might be in luck.

Congrats on getting as far as you did Stumblemonk. Maybe I'll get further next year ( i.e. actually submit something ).

Is the winner, David Rosenbaum, a member of the forum? I look forward to trying this Maple Ave Breakfast Stout in Foxboro this fall...the IPA last year was great!

I'm guessing he's not a member.. I have seen his name pop up in local competitions before. I think he's a member of Brew Free or Die up in NH.

I wonder what would have happened if the Oktoberfest was head and shoulders about the other finalists. Given when the NFL season starts, it would be right up against SA's own Oktoberfest. I'm pretty sure that seasonal brands are second only to the Boston Lager for their sales, so I wonder if that one really had a chance (douchy sportswriter critiques notwithstanding)...

I was wondering something along the same lines. Like is an ale going to win this every year because they want something they can produce quickly and not tie up a lot of storage space. This way if half way through the season sales are better than expected they can brew another batch quickly, and not have to worry about lagering time.

Sorry for the conspiracy theories, but just sayin'.

If I win next year, I'll put the BN as my club, and wear a hop grenade at the games.

There was no place to put a club name on the entry form.. hmm..

Given the amount of lager brewing SA does, I would guess that a lager stands a fair chance. Especially since the beer will get brewed in Boston, where they seem to have a system and tank space to do various experimental beers (for those of you not around these parts, SA makes a lot of "special" stuff that tends to only show up at fests or in Boston beer bars). The rules actually had gravity guidelines for entries, and they permitted a much higher SG for lagers (1.090!) than for ale entries (1.068).

that sucks about the final stumblemonk, obviously Jim Koch knows what he's doing, and that guy Normann knows a hell of a lot about beer - I don't know if he's official BJCP but he is as qualified as one, the retard from WEEI and the retard from the Metro wouldn't know a good beer if it bit them in the ass

I took 1st in Belgian and French Ales but didn't make the final 5. That final 5 is the real accomplishment, all of the best judges from the early rounds judged that and cut it from 23 down to 5 - you kicked my ass thats for sure. Small consolation I'm sure but at least at that point any of the 5 deserve to win.
On tap 1: Dry Irish
On tap 2: El Jefeweizen
On tap 3: Vienna
kegged: Rye Amber, Belgian Dark Strong, CYBI Mirror Pond, Irish Red, RIS
lagering: Vienna, Helles, Cream Ale, CAP

+1

I've done BOS judging before. Going from 5 beers down to 1 takes twice as long as going from 23 to 5. Being in the top 5 of any large competition is an awesome accomplishment.

tonight i just bottled one of my longshot entries...its the changes that i'd like to see in DFH aprihop....ie my version. I brewed a fruit beer because every year a fruit beer makes $5000. I hope this year that mine does so i can buy justin a year supply of ramen noodles.
