Competition Question

All,
Our club is in the process of planning its second competition. Recently we've had discussion about what a brewer would really like to recieve as an award for earning a place. Last year we gave medals and certificated for first, second and third. We also gave certificates to all participants. I'm hoping all will be able to provide some feedback in this survey. I'm also interested in learning whether or not brewers like recieving participant certificates.
Thanks in advance!
Crupp

My hope is someday entry forms will have a place where I can indicate I don't want a ribbon, medal, or certificate. I understand where many would want them and I think they should definitely be offered. All I really want for my $7 is a well filled out score sheet by a qualified judge and timely results.

Of course, swag is always welcome.

I'd like to have a medal and certificate as a prize. As a new brewer who is getting ready to enter my first competition, any sort of "prize" with the place would be really neat to have.

Since I've only entered one comp, I'm still in the "I'd like a ribbon" camp. Once I've gotten a few, though, I can see how, unless it's the Ninkasi or the NHC or something, I probably won't want the prizes any more. The score sheets, though, will always be welcome.

A medal and certificate are quite nice, especially for those folks new to competition. However, for smaller competitions the cost of doing medals is quite high compared to the amount of revenue taken in for entry fees. I would much rather get just a ribbon or certificate (in addition to a well filled out score sheet) instead of paying higher entry fees.

+1 on that. Being new to comps, I think a medal would be absolutely kick-ass!! But... if getting a ribbon would bring down the cost of entry then I'm all for that. I also have to agree with everyone else that some of the best stuff to get is that well filled out score sheet. Always wanna know where I can improve my brew.

I agree with that, let the big well financed comps give out medals. A ribbon and/or cert is fine and more cost effective for the smaller ones. Not even the NHC gives out medals for the first round and they charge non AHA members over $10/entry
